The Complete Process of Building a Custom LEGO Minifigure: What Are You Actually Paying For?

Have you ever looked at a custom LEGO minifigure and wondered why it costs significantly more than a regular minifigure off the shelf?

It is a question we occasionally receive at Loot A Brick, especially from collectors who are new to custom minifigures. After all, at first glance, a custom minifig may look like "just a few LEGO pieces put together."

However, what many people do not see is the amount of planning, design work, craftsmanship, communication, and production that happens behind the scenes before a custom minifigure ever reaches your hands.

Today, we would like to pull back the curtain and show you the complete journey of creating a custom minifigure. Not only will this help you understand the work involved, but it will also help you appreciate the craftsmanship and time that goes into every custom piece.

Step 1: Consultation and Understanding Your Vision

Every custom minifigure begins with an idea.

Some clients approach us with a detailed character design, while others may only have a rough concept or reference image. Regardless of the starting point, the first step is always consultation.

During this stage, we discuss:

  • The character or concept you want
  • Required accessories and equipment
  • Desired colours and design details
  • Printing requirements
  • Handcrafted or sculpted elements
  • Quantity required

This process often involves several rounds of emails, messages, or phone calls. For straightforward projects, confirmation may take a few days. More complex projects can take up to a week or longer before everyone is aligned on the final vision.

Much like building a house, a strong foundation is important before any construction begins.

Step 2: Reaching an Agreement and Payment

Once the design requirements are confirmed, we proceed with quotation and payment arrangements.

At this point, we have a clear understanding of the scope of work, materials required, printing complexity, handcrafted components, and estimated timeline.

Only after everything has been agreed upon can production begin.

Step 3: Design Drafts and Concept Development

This is where the creative work truly starts.

Our team begins creating rough design drafts for:

  • Custom printing layouts
  • Hand-painted details
  • Handcrafted accessories
  • Sculpted components
  • Special modifications

Depending on the complexity of the project, this stage usually takes around one week.

Unlike mass-produced products, every custom minifigure is individually planned and designed. This means real people are spending time translating an idea into something that can physically exist as a minifigure.

Step 4: Draft Review and Customer Approval

Before moving into production, we show the design drafts to the client for approval.

For larger orders of more than 20 pieces with the same design, we will usually present the design draft before production begins to ensure everything meets expectations.

This step is extremely important because it allows adjustments to be made before resources, materials, and labour are committed to production.

In other words, we want to make sure we are building exactly what you envisioned.

Step 5: Printing, Painting, and Handcrafting

This is often the most time-consuming part of the process.

Once the design is approved, we begin creating the actual parts required for the custom minifigure.

This may involve:

  • Custom UV printing
  • Hand-painting intricate details
  • Creating sculpted accessories
  • Producing custom weapons
  • Designing unique hairpieces
  • Handcrafting armour or clothing elements

For standard printed designs, production may take between 3 to 5 working days for a single piece.

For larger quantity orders, production can take between 1 and 3 weeks depending on complexity and volume.

Handcrafted components require even more time. Draft handcrafted parts alone typically take 1 to 2 weeks to complete before approval.

Unlike machine-made products, handcrafted pieces require patience, precision, and attention to detail. Every detail is created by skilled hands rather than simply being generated by a machine.

Step 6: Second Approval Check

Once the printed, painted, and handcrafted parts are completed, we show them to the client again for approval.

This additional quality-control stage ensures that:

  • Colours are accurate
  • Printing is correct
  • Sculpted elements match expectations
  • Final details are satisfactory

Only after receiving approval do we proceed to final assembly.

This extra step may add time to the process, but it helps ensure the final product meets the standard both you and we expect.

Step 7: Final Painting and Assembly

With all components approved, the final stage begins.

Parts are painted, finished, assembled, and carefully checked before completion.

For a single handcrafted custom minifigure, painting and finishing can take another 1 to 1.5 weeks.

For larger handcrafted projects, timelines can extend into several weeks or even months.

In fact, the longest custom project we have ever completed took approximately 1.5 years from concept to delivery. While this is certainly not the norm, it demonstrates just how detailed and ambitious some custom projects can become.

So, What Are You Really Paying For?

When you purchase a custom minifigure, you are not simply paying for plastic parts.

You are paying for:

  • Consultation and planning
  • Design expertise
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Custom artwork
  • Printing technology
  • Hand-painting skills
  • Handcrafted components
  • Quality control
  • Multiple approval stages
  • Time and labour

Every custom minifigure represents hours — and sometimes weeks or months — of work behind the scenes.

While cheaper alternatives may exist, they often skip many of these stages. Designs may be copied, quality checks reduced, materials compromised, or craftsmanship rushed.

A quality custom minifigure is not just a product. It is a collaborative project between creator and collector.
