Herfjötur

Herfjötur is one of the Valkyries of Norse mythology, whose name is commonly translated as “Host-Fetter” or “Fetter of the Army.” Listed among the Valkyries in Grímnismál and Nafnaþulur, she belongs to the supernatural maidens who determine the fate of warriors in battle. Her name evokes the terrifying power of war itself—the ability to bind, restrain, or bring a warrior's advance to an end.

Like the other Valkyries, Herfjötur is associated with Odin and the battlefield, selecting fallen warriors who are destined for Valhalla or other realms of the dead. Though the surviving sources reveal little about her individual personality or deeds, her evocative name gives her a powerful presence in Norse tradition. She represents the grim, mysterious side of warfare and fate, where victory and death are ultimately determined by forces beyond any mortal warrior's control.
