Hooge, prince Su
Hooge (豪格), Prince Su (肃亲王), was a prominent Manchu prince and military commander during the transition from the late Ming dynasty to the early Qing dynasty. The eldest son of Hong Taiji, he belonged to the imperial Aisin Gioro clan and distinguished himself in campaigns against Ming forces and other opponents of the expanding Qing state. Following his father’s death in 1643, Hooge was considered a potential successor to the throne, but the political struggle ultimately resulted in the young Shunzhi Emperor becoming ruler.
As Prince Su of the First Rank, Hooge remained an important Qing commander and later led campaigns against the rebel leader Zhang Xianzhong’s forces in Sichuan, contributing to the consolidation of Qing rule. However, his rivalry with the powerful regent Dorgon proved disastrous: Hooge was arrested in 1648 and died in confinement soon afterward. He was posthumously rehabilitated, leaving him remembered as both a capable warrior-prince and a tragic figure caught in the fierce succession politics of the early Qing court.
