Wadjet

Wadjet, one of the oldest and most revered goddesses of ancient Egypt, was the fierce and protective cobra deity associated with royalty, sovereignty, and divine authority. As the guardian of Lower Egypt, she was often depicted as an upright cobra or a woman with a cobra’s head, and frequently appeared on the pharaoh’s crown in the form of the uraeus, ready to strike down any threat to the ruler. Wadjet symbolized both maternal protection and deadly wrath—she was the goddess who watched over the land and king like a vigilant flame. She played a prominent role in myth and ritual, often linked with the Eye of Ra, where she took the form of the sun god’s avenger and protector. In later periods, she was worshipped alongside Nekhbet, the vulture goddess of Upper Egypt, uniting the dual kingdoms under the divine rule of the pharaoh. Her sanctuary at Per-Wadjet (modern-day Buto) was a vital religious center for centuries.
