Water Margin Guo Sheng

Guo Sheng, nicknamed the “Earth Rat” (地鼠), is one of the 108 Stars of Destiny in Water Margin, the great Chinese classic. He first appears as one of three sworn brothers alongside Lu Fang and Deng Fei, ruling over a mountain stronghold before joining Liangshan. Known for his straightforward personality and fierce loyalty, Guo Sheng’s skills were not as refined as some of the great generals, yet his courage and determination earned him a place among the outlaws. His weapon of choice was a spear, which he wielded with solid discipline in battle. He symbolized the common warrior elevated by brotherhood and shared ideals. Guo Sheng’s willingness to follow and support his sworn brothers reflected the deep bonds that defined the Liangshan heroes.

Once he joined Song Jiang’s band, Guo Sheng served faithfully in campaigns against corrupt officials and invading enemies. He often fought alongside his sworn brothers, ensuring their strength as a trio remained intact in the Liangshan ranks. Though not among the most famous warriors, his presence embodied the inclusivity of the brotherhood, where valor and loyalty were as important as skill. He took part in the later imperial campaigns after Liangshan’s amnesty, fighting with consistency and determination. Ultimately, his life ended during these campaigns, sealing his fate as a loyal outlaw-turned-soldier of the Song. Guo Sheng is remembered as a steadfast, humble warrior, a reminder that even lesser-known figures contributed greatly to the brotherhood’s legacy.
