Dong Zhuo was one of the most infamous and tyrannical figures in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, whose brief rule plunged the Han Dynasty into deeper chaos. Originally a frontier general known for his military strength, Dong Zhuo rose to power by taking control of the imperial court after deposing the young Emperor Liu Bian and installing Emperor Xian as a puppet. Arrogant and cruel, he ruled through fear, indulging in lavish extravagance while brutally eliminating political rivals. His dominance was enforced by the fearsome warrior Lü Bu, whom he adopted as his son, further solidifying his grip on the capital, Luoyang. Dong Zhuo’s tyranny and arrogance eventually united many warlords against him, leading to the formation of a coalition and, ultimately, his downfall at the hands of Lü Bu himself. His reign, though short-lived, marked a turning point in the collapse of the Han and the rise of the warlord era.
