Song Dynasty Imperial Guards

The Song Dynasty Imperial Guards (禁军) represented the highly organized military forces responsible for protecting the emperor, the capital, and the imperial court. At the heart of the palace command was the Dianqiansi (殿前司), one of the major military commands of the Song, overseeing the Zhūbānzhí (諸班直) and other elite units. Its troops performed palace guard duty, escorted the emperor outside the palace, guarded major ceremonies, and maintained the imperial guard and ceremonial formations.

Among these were prestigious inner-guard formations such as the Inner Palace Guards (內殿直) and the Yulong (御龍) units, alongside specialized guards including the Golden Spear, archery, crossbow, and ceremonial divisions. These Zhūbānzhí were closely associated with imperial service and represented the disciplined, highly visible warrior elite of the Song court. For a minifigure collection, they make an excellent representation of imperial palace guards—formal, heavily equipped, and ever-present around the emperor and inner court.
