Zhang Yanze

Zhang Yanze (張彥澤) was a notorious military general during the late Later Jin period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era. Though undeniably brave and capable on the battlefield, he gained a fearsome reputation for his cruelty, arrogance, and abuse of power. As one of the most influential commanders of his time, he helped secure military victories for the Later Jin dynasty, but his harsh treatment of both enemies and civilians made him widely hated throughout the realm.

History remembers Zhang Yanze less as a hero and more as a cautionary tale of ambition without virtue. During the Khitan invasion that brought down Later Jin, his opportunistic actions and oppressive conduct further damaged his legacy. While many generals of the era earned fame through loyalty or honor, Zhang Yanze became infamous for his ruthlessness, leaving behind a reputation as one of the most feared and controversial figures of the turbulent Five Dynasties period.
