Wei Zifu

Wei Zifu (衛子夫) rose from humble beginnings as a singer in the household of Princess Pingyang to become the beloved empress of Emperor Wu of Han, one of China's greatest rulers. Renowned for her grace, humility, and quiet wisdom, she bore the emperor's heir and presided over the imperial court for nearly four decades. Unlike many powerful consorts remembered for intrigue, Wei Zifu earned widespread admiration for her modest character and compassionate leadership, helping to usher in one of the Han dynasty's most prosperous eras.

Her life, however, ended in tragedy amid the devastating Witchcraft Affair, when political conspiracies engulfed the imperial family. Forced to take her own life despite years of faithful service, Wei Zifu became a poignant symbol of loyalty undone by palace politics. Today, she is remembered not only as the mother of the crown prince and the matriarch of the influential Wei family, but also as one of Chinese history's most dignified and tragic empresses, whose legacy continues to inspire historical novels, dramas, and admirers of the Han dynasty.
