Wei Yan
Wei Yan, courtesy name Wenchang, was a bold and formidable general who served under Liu Bei and later Zhuge Liang during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. Known for his towering presence, fiery temperament, and unmatched bravery, Wei Yan played a crucial role in many of Shu Han’s campaigns, including the conquest of Hanzhong and the northern expeditions into Wei territory. Though not of noble birth, his martial talent earned him high ranks and the trust of Liu Bei, who famously described him as having the "appearance of a tiger." Despite his battlefield success, Wei Yan’s strong personality and independent streak often brought him into conflict with other officers, particularly Yang Yi. His unconventional thinking and ambition led to suspicion, especially after Zhuge Liang’s death. Ultimately, he was accused of rebellion and killed in the ensuing power struggle, though many later historians believe his actions were misunderstood or exaggerated.
Wei Yan was fierce, independent, and loyal. He charged where others hesitated. His loyalty to Shu was never in doubt—only his methods. He clashed with bureaucracy but thrived in battle. His death remains one of Shu’s great controversies. Wei Yan was a warrior whose fire could not be tamed, even in death.
