Water Margin Pan Jin Lian, Xi Men Qing and Wu Da Lang

Pan Jinlian (潘金莲), Xi Menqing (西门庆), and Wu Dalang (武大郎) are three central figures in one of the most infamous stories in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan), a tale of desire, deception, and betrayal. Pan Jinlian, Wu Dalang’s wife, is portrayed as a beautiful but scheming woman, while Xi Menqing is a wealthy and influential merchant known for his seductive charm and unscrupulous behavior. Wu Dalang, Pan Jinlian’s husband, is a humble street vendor whose tragic fate becomes the catalyst for one of the novel’s most dramatic revenge stories.

Together, the trio represents the darker side of human nature in classical Chinese literature, where lust, greed, jealousy, and betrayal lead to devastating consequences. Their story ultimately draws in Wu Dalang’s formidable younger brother, Wu Song, whose pursuit of justice becomes one of Water Margin’s most memorable episodes. For fans of the novel, these three characters form an iconic ensemble that captures the intrigue and moral complexity of this enduring Chinese literary classic.
