Water Margin Xuan Zan
Xuan Zan (宣贊), nicknamed the “Ugly Commandery Prince” (醜郡馬), is a military officer who appears in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan). A skilled warrior and experienced commander, he initially serves the imperial forces and becomes associated with Guan Sheng, fighting against the Liangshan heroes during the campaigns against the bandits. Despite his unremarkable appearance, Xuan Zan is portrayed as courageous, loyal, and capable on the battlefield.
After being defeated and captured by the Liangshan forces, Xuan Zan eventually joins the 108 Stars of Destiny at Liangshan. He is ranked among the 36 Heavenly Spirits, taking the position of the “Heavenly Sword Star” (天劍星). For fans of Water Margin, Xuan Zan is a memorable example of the novel’s recurring theme that a warrior’s bravery and ability matter far more than outward appearance or social status.
