Zhang Ju Zheng

Zhang Juzheng was the most powerful and capable statesman of the mid-Ming Dynasty, serving as Grand Secretary during the reign of the Wanli Emperor. A brilliant administrator and reformer, he strengthened the empire through decisive fiscal reforms, strict governance, and a relentless campaign against corruption within the bureaucracy.

Zhang Juzheng reorganized the tax system through the famous “Single Whip Reform,” stabilizing state finances and restoring order to an overburdened administration. Though admired for his competence and determination, his concentration of power earned many enemies at court, and after his death his reputation was attacked by rivals. Today, he is remembered as one of the Ming Dynasty’s greatest reformers, a statesman whose vision briefly revived the strength of a declining empire.
