Hel

Hel is the formidable ruler of Hel, the realm of the dead in Norse mythology, and a daughter of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboða. Sent by Odin to govern those who died from sickness, old age, and other causes outside heroic battle, she presides over her shadowy realm with solemn authority. Old Norse tradition describes her striking appearance as partly flesh-colored and partly dark or corpse-like, reflecting her intimate connection with the boundary between life and death.

Unlike a simple embodiment of evil, Hel represents the inevitable and impartial nature of mortality. From her hall Éljúðnir, she receives the dead and possesses authority so great that even the gods must respect the laws of her realm, famously demonstrated in the story of Baldr. Mysterious, uncompromising, and powerful, Hel remains one of Norse mythology’s most memorable figures—a haunting queen whose domain awaits those who do not enter the glorious halls of the battle-slain.
